  3. Toca Madera - Design Challenge @ Madrid Design Festival

    The finalists from AHEC's Toca Madera young designers competition will be on display during the Madrid Design Festival.

    The competition, organized by AIDI Industrial Design Engineering Association and the American Hardwood Export Council, challenged the participants to design “infinite objects”, objects to survive the test of time, all made using American red oak. This project brief led young designers to think critically about the lifecycle of the objects they design as well as the visual and environmental advantages of using American wood products.

    During the Madrid Design Festival 2020, a selection committee formed by renowned Spanish designers, representatives of national institutions in the design field, specialized communicators and representatives of the organizing associations will choose the three winning projects

  4. MultiPly @ Madrid Design Festival

    MultiPly, an eight-meter high, carbon-neutral timber pavilion made exclusively from American tulipwood, opens to the public in Madrid Rio at its entrance to the Casa de Campo, as part of the Madrid Design Festival in Feb 2020.

    The 32 m3 of tulipwood used for MultiPly stores the equivalent of 22 tonnes of carbon dioxide and is naturally replaced with new growth in the U.S. forests in less than two minutes.

    The installation is a collaboration between Waugh Thistleton Architects, the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and ARUP, and responds to two of the greatest challenges of our time: the growing need for housing and the urgency to fight climate change, presenting as a solution the combination of modular systems and sustainable building materials.
